THE ORDER OF THE FLAGON: SESSION 0, SATURDAY JANUARY 17TH
A new group of adventurers, hopefully a new group of friends, were met on Saturday. I was contacted by someone who is a friend of a player from another one of my paid games. He inquired about a game and has gathered three others seeking a D&D 5E game. We met at the house of one of the players for a session 0 and to create characters, set expectations, to find out what sort of campaign they would like to play, and to see if we gel as individuals so that a game is possible.
JT is first. It was he that sought me out and gathered the others. JT has a good amount of experience as a player with D&D 5E and is building a wizard who was once a simple fisherman. Why was he called to arcane arts? What is it he is looking for? Power? Glory? Dark secrets?
Pat is our host for the game, and has some experience with D&D, though he has not played in some time. He will be a dwarf, a cleric of the War Domain. He has a hatred of the undead who nearly destroyed his clan when they dug too deep into the earth and they breached a long forgotten tomb freeing the dead.
Matt, our third player, has the most experience. He is a forever DM who jumped at the chance to get out from behind the screen so he can be a player. He will be a monk trained in the way of shadow, a follower of the dark goddess Shar. Why does he follow an evil goddess? What are his goals?
Lastly, but certainly not least is Chris. He has never played D&D, at least not the tabletop game. His only exposure is Baldurs Gate 3, but he is eager to learn and be at the table. His enthusiasm is infectious. He has decided on a Wood Elf Ranger. Where does he come from? Why has he left the forests he is sworn to protect?
We seem to have gotten along famously and all seem to be in agreement as to the type of campaign we would like to play, themes that are acceptable, and we went over my session 0 worksheet, what my expectations are as a DM, what they are looking for from me as a paid DungeonMaster, and scheduling seems to be going off without issue (knock on wood).
