MASTER AND APPRENTICE – CAMPAIGN 1 : SESSION 0 RECAP
What’s going on, everybody? The Apprentice here, with a quick recap of our Session Zero for a new D&D 5e campaign that Dad is running for me and our buddies Nathan and Josh.
This is a Forgotten Realms campaign.
I’m playing Aldor “Bones” Shreeves,
Nathan is playing Ukalis, a mysterious wizard who runs a mystic shop in Neverwinter,
and Josh is playing Cade, a jaded warrior of the Neverwinter infantry — betrayed, backstabbed, and now surviving as a mercenary.
Aldor was born into a wealthy merchant family, but his childhood was cut short by bloodshed when a coven of vampires slaughtered his family. Still young, he was sent to a church-funded orphanage, where he quickly learned that charity doesn’t guarantee a full stomach. Survival meant stealing, scheming, and relying on each other. Before long, Aldor founded a street gang along with the other children and young men of the orphanage and they became known as “The Nest of Knives.” This was his life until Gideon, the guardsman that found him after the slaughter of his family and left him with the orphanage, plucked him out of the street and armed him in the name of the city as a guardsman on the night watch. But this life confirmed everything Aldor knew, a life of servitude to a corrupt system would lead any to an early and unmemorable grave. Gideon didn’t have a choice, he was getting older, his wife needed him to stay in a steady job, and all he knew was the streets of this city, and how to wield a blade to defend it. Aldor on the other hand was young enough to change it up and make more than just a living. He wanted enough to secure the means to give himself the security he so desperately sought, and the tools to end vampire kind, or at the very least, the ones that took everything from him…
One night while weighing his options, almost like fate was extending an olive branch, he spotted a simple contract pinned to a tavern wall: “local muscle needed for a night watch for a mystic shop”. Aldor knew rumors of this wizard. Recently, he had the reputation of selling magic items that may or may not be magic…cures that tasted a lot like city water. But this job got Aldor close to a lot of occult knowledge and tomes, and Ulkalis let him sleep in the storage shed next to the shop for free, this could be his best shot at revenge, and a little coin too. Our campaign opens on the third night Cade and Aldor have spent guarding the place together.
Be sure to check out future recaps to find out:
Is Ukalis truly a renowned magician being framed by rival spellcasters — or is he up to something far more sinister?
Will Cade rediscover his faith in the greater good, or wander the Realms without a true north?
And will Aldor ever find the vampires who destroyed his family… or stop looking over his shoulder long enough to breathe? Because some secrets don’t stay buried forever — and if his family has one like he’s afraid of, it may catch up to him long before he’s ready.
