FRIDAY, DECEMBER 12th - DAGGERHEART : SESSION 2
The curse has ended, the trapped spirits of the Roberts family have been free and as a parting gift, the captain has bequeathed the manner everything within it and the grounds it set upon to the party for freeing them.
We pick up with the party standing in the captains study, trying to determine what their next step should be. The home is far nicer than any of the three of them have ever lived in and there are many belongings around that they have yet to ascertain what they might be or if they would be used to them. The group decides to explore the house a bit more to see if there’s anything that they could sell that might help them to fix up the house which is in need of some mending and a little TLC. Seventh decides that he will wander the house to make sure that all of the spirits are truly gone in the houses at peace. Holly decides to explore the children’s rooms to see if there’s anything else that could be used for her diminutive size.
Topaz decides to explore the study a bit more. Her investigation soon discovered that part of the mantle moved when she touched it. Manipulating the decorative piece of masonry, she found that the back part of the fireplace slid in exposing what appeared to be some sort of a passageway behind it. Taking up a lantern, she moved inside without alerting her comrades to see where the passage may lead.
The air grew cold and damp as she moved down the passageway and found a narrow spiral staircase that led deep beneath the manner home into the bedrock of the cliff. She came to a very narrow landing after descending for quite some time opposite of the stairs was a heavy wooden door reinforced with iron bindings set with multiple locks. Tried to Jimmy the lock but wound up breaking off the small implement. She was using inside of the first lock. Deciding that this might be beyond her abilities to enter on her own she decided to go back up to the home and fetch her companions.
The three companions descended back down the narrow staircase to the locked door. The keys that they had found on the desk along with the deed were able to open the door, presenting them with a small treasure room. They found inside pieces of art, pieces of jewelry, a dish of small jams, Golden silver coins, and several small golfers, as well as the figure heads from three ships.
Taking stock of what was there each of the companions took a few pieces of jewelry and decided they would go to Embre’s Emporium to see if they could sell the items to make a little coin. Embre is a Fungril who runs the general store in New Moon Harbor and buys and sells all manner of things.
The three friends Made their way from the manner down to the small town below. They decided to go by the job posting board near the harbor to see if there was any work that they might take on. They they saw a couple of ships being unloaded and saw the old dwarf Eltorik, fishing at the end of the pier. Walking over to their friend, they told him of their exploits and that they had broken the curse, and that the Manor house was no longer haunted. They showed him the deed and the keys to the manner telling him that they were now the proud owners of the Roberts estate. The party decided if they were going to take work or leave town to go adventuring. They would need someone to take care of the manner while they were gone. Knowing that Eltorik is retired, and if left to his own devices will only be in his cops or in trouble. They decided to offer him a job as a caretaker for the home. Negotiations sued, and once the price was a great upon the old dwarf, picked up his fishing tackle and decided to set off for his new place of employment.
Checking the posting boards the group found nothing that appeal to them as most of it appeared to simply be manual labor working at the dock or the warehouse is nearby. They made their way back into town towards The Busted Mug on their way there they encountered Hezra, the Orc magistrate and crony of the town mayor, Varog, the Faun and wealthiest man in New Moon Harbor since the disappearance of Captain Roberts.
The crafty Orc approached the friends and told them he had just spoken with Eltorik and heard of their good fortune and wondered what their plans were for paying the past due taxes on the estate. The three friends looked at one another and cursed their luck for the old dwarf speaking their business. They decided their best option was to go to the Emporium sell the items they had brought and then go see the mayor to find out what their back taxes were so they could fashion a way to pay them.
Selling the jewelry, they managed to walk away with approximately 200 gold pieces. They made their way to the mayors office and were shown into the mayors study. They’re the pompous dandy of a fawn was only too happy to tell them they owed him 700 gold pieces and back taxes. He told them they had three months to pay the back taxes or he would seize the property in lieu of the monies owed.
The three friends made their way throughout the house, picking up candlesticks, silver mirrors, and things of value that they could sell to raise the funds they would need to pay the back taxes. They tried not to touch the treasury for fear that it might be questioned, but gathering items they could they turned in for the night knowing that tomorrow morning, they would have to go down to town visit with the mayor and pay him his blood money.
The next morning, bright, and early they set off, going directly to the mayors office they paid their taxes much to his shock. At their insistence he signed a receipt for them, and they decided now they definitely needed work as they wanted to avoid tipping others off in town that there was treasure hidden in the manor.
While passing through town, they noticed a strange Galapa following them and watching them. Topaz being paranoid she decided to confront the turtle only to find out that he is a holy man and is looking for help in recovering a lost artifact. The Galapa introduced himself as
Kal’am’Var and he is searching for the Lost Shell of Yon’Ge Lightbringer. He showed the party a sketch of an elaborately carved Galapa shell and told them that he had tracked it to a mountain chain to the west and believe that was the final resting place of Yon’Ge. He told them sadly he is too old and slow for adventures and would gladly pay them for their services. He had heard about town that these three were adventures of sorts and capable of handling themselves.
Paying the party 100 gold as a retainer which the party put to use to purchase supplies and outfit themselves for their trip to the mountains. They set out the next morning traveling along the West Road towards the mountains in the distance. Their journey was uneventful until the final night as they moved into the foothills of the mountains. As night closed in they made camp and set watches. Topaz had the last watch and as the fire fell to bright coals, she heard the sound of some sort of nightbird nearby. Being paranoid by nature, she decided to move away from the fire to investigate looking into the woods. She made out a dark shape moving from tree to tree trying to avoid detection. As she caught sight of movement again she took out her slingshot and let fly a bullet being satisfied by the sound of the bullet impacting flesh and a cry of erupting from the dark amongst the trees.
